About us

I passed my driver’s license test after the fourth try

1. Failure is a normal thing in life

We all fail sometimes. Whether due to unfortunate circumstances, poor conduct, or simply failing at anything, we will all eventually have to deal with it. And this is my story in which I failed 3 times in my driving test and get my license at 4th effort.

I grew up in Geneva, Switzerland, where the legal driving age was 18, and moved to New York as soon as I could.  At 26, I had a job, an apartment, a boyfriend, and two cats—but I couldn’t leave town if the trains were down. I thought about taking my road test, but reasoned my way out of it. I cultivated my own set of delusions: I was waiting for self-driving vehicles. I was saving the environment. I, too, would have a personal driver.

My inability to drive only began to bother me in earnest when it got in the way of my work as a reporter. I missed out on a great assignment covering a deadly train crash in Quebec because it was in the sticks and the trains…well, the train had crashed. Not driving was getting in the way of my career, and I was ambitious. So as soon as I had the time and the money to sign up for classes, I did.

On the first two times I, couldn’t pass the driving test although I spent a lot of time and money on driving sessions with tutors. On the third try, I unluckily failed to get through the paper test. After three efforts, I still couldn’t obtain my license. I was really disappointed in myself, I stopped thinking about driving for a couple of years after.

2. Come back after failure and success

One day, I wanted to get behind the wheel and escape everything that was wrong as far as possible, but I required a license and wasn’t in the appropriate frame of mind to take on what seemed like a near-certain probability of failure.

This time I practice with the help of my neighbor named Jimmy.  Over the next three months, I re-re-relearned to drive, one step at a time, and I was set to take the exam in mid-January. About the general knowledge test, which failed to pass the last time, I also review it seriously through the online DMV practice test.

A practice test is the only method to determine how well you are preparing. You should ideally take several practice tests before setting a day and time for your permit test. Practice tests will give you a realistic idea of what to expect on the actual examination and will enable you to identify your areas of weakness.

On the test day, I did the general knowledge test more easily but I still made some mistakes. When the examiner added up my points, I felt familiar dread.  I’ve definitely failed, I told myself. But then he congratulated me. “You passed!” he said. It felt unreal.

It was frustrating to keep failing my tests, but it was also illuminating. I got a taste of failure and gained insight into achievement as a result of it. Now that I get my driver’s license, I can go anywhere I would like, it also supports me a lot in my duties. I am really grateful for the DMV Practice tests and my good instructor, Jimmy.
