Free Apprentice CSCS Cards Make Things Easier
Health and safety issues are always of the utmost importance, especially in dangerous environments like construction. The need to ensure that those now enrolled in or about to begin apprenticeships are using the appropriate Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, specifically the Apprentice card, is reminded to employers and the greater sector.

In order to address this issue before the start of the new academic year, CSCS is removing the charge for Apprentice cards and streamlining the application process. In instance, all Apprentice cards can be given without cost starting in July 2022.

In addition, CSCS will introduce a new process for anyone experiencing trouble signing up for an apprenticeship. In this scenario, the new candidate might initially apply for the provisional card, which costs £36; after that, they might switch to the free apprentice card. In other words, employers and trainees will apply for a Provisional card before completing the apprenticeship enrolling process.

“The Provisional card is valid for six months, cannot be renewed, and needs passing the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test, which can be transferred to the Apprentice card,” stated Alan O’Neile, Head of Communications at CSCS. The trainee will transition for free from the provisional card to the apprentice card once accepted into the program.

The Provisional card does not need a Level 1 award, unlike the Labourer card, which saves both the employer and the new employee time and money.

The Provisional card option provides companies and new hires with a six-month window to determine whether the apprenticeship is the perfect fit for them, said Alan O’Neile.

Free apprentice cards are distributed, but replacements for lost or cards issued to people with other names will cost £36. The card has a four and a half year expiration date and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are anticipated to have finished their apprenticeship and applied for a skilled CSCS card by the time their card expires.
